JANESVILLE — Some cities wear awards like a badge of honor, the city of Janesville likely will not feel such a way about their most recent accolade.

At their latest “Proggy Awards,” PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) recognized brands, individuals, and cities this year for progress when it comes to outstanding animal welfare and vegan initiatives.

They also handed out some “anti-awards” this year, attempting to shame companies and municipalities.

The city of Janesville received the “Worst Place to Live if You’re a Chicken” award. PETA explained that the award went to the city that had the most chicken restaurants per capita — Janesville leads the country in that particular statistic with a higher rate than the next two cities combined.

“We at PETA believe that every chicken ought to live its life without the fear of being turned into a Caniac Combo,” said Tracy Reiman, President of PETA. “I don’t care how tasty it is or how good the ‘secret sauce’ is that you dip it in. It’s not right. Janesville should be ashamed of the deliberate torment that takes place to appease the Milton Avenue collection of chicken restaurants.”

PETA has paid for a billboard that will be displayed near the “chicken corridor” that features Raising Cane’s, Layne’s Chicken, Popeyes, and Buffalo Wild Wings.

While some may be annoyed by this being the public’s perceived view of Janesville, I think we can all agree that it is better than having no identity at all (we’re looking at you, Edgerton).
